How to choose your first wig

For a first wig, a closure, a natural color and a medium density are the simplest place to start.

Step by step

  • Closures (4x4, 5x5) are glueless and have less lace to place than lace fronts.
  • Natural black or brown blends most easily with your own hair.
  • Medium density (150% to 180%) looks natural and weighs less.
  • Straight and body wave are the easiest textures to style.
  • Before shipping we send you photos or a video of your exact wig.

Closure or lace front for a first wig?

Choose by how you wear your hair, not by the photo. Both look natural when they are put on well; they differ in how much work the front takes.

  • Pick a 4x4 or 5x5 closure if you wear a middle or slight side part with the hair down, want to put the wig on in minutes without adhesive, or take it off every night. Closures are glueless as standard.
  • Pick a 13x4 lace front if you want to part anywhere across the front, wear the hair swept back or in a ponytail, or show the hairline at the temples. The paid glueless add-on lets you wear it without adhesive.
  • Pick a 13x6 only if you already know you want a deep side part.
  • HD lace is thinner and blends better up close, but it needs gentler hands; transparent lace is more forgiving while you learn.

How to choose a wig color for your first wig

The most natural first wig is close to your own hair, not a big change.

  • Match your roots and brows: natural black 1B for dark hair, chocolate brown #4 for brown hair. Stay within a shade or two of your own color.
  • Check your undertone: warm skin, with golden or olive hints, suits honey, copper and warm browns; cool skin, with pink or blue hints, suits wine, burgundy and cooler browns.
  • Want to try lighter? A 4/27 or P4/27 highlight keeps a brown base at the part, so it looks grown in and needs less upkeep than full blonde.
  • Full 613 blonde and fashion colors are a bigger commitment: they need purple shampoo, lower heat and more conditioning; save them for your second wig if wig care is new to you.
  • Screens change color, so we label digital color previews on the photos and send photos or a short video of your exact wig before shipping.

Length and density for a first wig

A first wig should be easy to wear all day. Length and density decide how heavy it feels and how much it tangles.

  • Length: 16 to 20 inches falls between the collarbone and the chest, long enough to style, short enough to manage. A bob, 10 to 16 inches, is the lightest option.
  • Density: 150% or 180% looks natural and weighs less than 250% or 300%, which are glam looks for later.
  • Curly and wavy textures look shorter than their length, because length is measured stretched: go one length up for curls.
  • Very long lengths, 26 inches and up, tangle more at the nape and take longer to wash and dry; enjoy them once you know your routine.
  • Every wig shows its weight for each length and density, so you can compare before you order.

What to check when your first wig arrives

A few checks before the first wear make the first day easier.

  • Compare it with the photos or video we sent before shipping: color, length and texture should match your exact wig.
  • Try it on before cutting anything: set the band snug, look at the fit in daylight and move your head.
  • Expect to trim the lace to your hairline before the first wear; it comes long on purpose.
  • Packing can flatten curls or leave a soft bend in straight hair: a wash and air-dry, or one light flat-iron pass, brings it back.
  • Practice putting it on and taking it off a few times at home before you wear it out.
  • If something looks different from what you ordered, contact us before you cut the lace or wash the wig.

Questions

How do you style wigs for beginners?

Start with the part and the front, where a wig looks real or not. Set a middle or side part, lay a few baby hairs with a little edge control, and bend the front pieces toward your face with a flat iron. Then add one easy change at a time: tuck one side behind the ear, a half-up clip or a low ponytail on a lace front. Keep heat moderate and use a protectant.

How do you choose a wig color?

Start from your own hair, brows and undertone. For a natural look pick a shade within one or two of your hair: natural black 1B for dark hair, chocolate brown #4 for brown. Warm undertones suit honey and copper; cool undertones suit wine and burgundy. If you want to try blonde, a 4/27 or P4/27 highlight keeps a darker part. Check the color in daylight photos, not only on screen.

How do you make a closure wig for beginners?

Sew a closure and bundles onto a dome wig cap on a canvas head. Pin the cap and the 4x4 or 5x5 closure at the front center, and sew the closure's edges to the cap. Then sew the wefts in rows from the nape up, with a curved needle and weaving thread, until they meet the closure. Cut away the cap under the closure, add a band and style. Expect the first one to take patience; ready-made closure wigs skip all of it.

How do you cut wigs for beginners?

Cut on a stand, dry, and a little at a time. Fix the wig on a head-shaped stand with T-pins, set the part where you wear it and clip the upper layers up. Start at the nape and set your length there, then release the upper layers one by one and cut each to meet that guide line. Point-cut the ends to soften them. Take off less than you think: you can always cut more, but you cannot put hair back.

How do you pluck wigs for beginners?

Pluck on a stand, in daylight, a few hairs at a time. Part the front hairline into thin sections and, with slanted tweezers, pull one or two hairs from the first rows, zigzagging along the edge so it is not a straight line. Check the wig on your head often, and stop before it looks thin: plucked hair does not grow back. Or ask about a pre-plucked hairline; it depends on the hair batch in production.

How do you make wigs look natural for beginners?

Get three things right: the hairline, the part and the shine. Trim the lace close to your hairline and melt it with a scarf, choose a cap that matches your skin, and dab concealer under the part to make it look like scalp. Pick 150% or 180% density, which looks like real hair, and let a few baby hairs soften the edge. A first wash also tones down the bright shine of new hair.

How do you wear wigs for beginners?

Ease into it. Wear the wig around the house first, then for short outings, and build up to full days as the fit and the look start to feel normal. Keep the band snug but comfortable, carry a comb and two bobby pins, and check the back in a mirror before leaving. Take it off at night so your scalp rests, and put it on a stand so it keeps its shape.

What is the easiest wig for a beginner?

A glueless closure wig in a natural color and medium density: it goes on in minutes and needs no adhesive.
