Look and feel
Kinky curly imitates tightly coiled natural hair, with full volume and a soft, textured finish. It pairs naturally with afro-textured hair and protective-style routines.
How it looks at each length
Kinky curly shrinks the most of all our curls, because tight coils use up the most length. It comes from 16 to 32 inches (41 to 81 cm), measured stretched. On the head, 16 inches makes a rounded afro around the chin, 20 inches sits near the shoulders, 24 inches reaches the collarbone and 32 inches falls around the chest. Long, dense kinky curly gets heavy: the weight flattens the crown while the sides keep spreading, which gives a triangle shape. Lift the roots with a pick each morning, or ask us about shaping layers, quoted before you pay.
Which density to choose
Coils fill more space than waves, so kinky curly looks denser than a straight wig at the same percentage. 150% gives a soft, natural afro where the part shows a little scalp. 180% and 200% are the full everyday afro. 250% and 300% build a big statement shape; they suit 20 inches and longer, while on a 16 inch wig they puff out wider than they are long.
How to style it
Pick it out at the roots for an afro shape, or wear it in a puff with a wide band.
- Rounded afro: lift the roots with a wide-tooth pick, then pat the outline into shape with your palms; never comb through the ends.
- Twist-out: two-strand twist damp hair with a curl cream, let it dry completely, then unravel it for stretched, defined coils that show more length.
- Two puffs: part down the middle and gather each side into a loose puff with a satin scrunchie, leaving a few coils out at the temples.
- Headwrap: tie a wide scarf just behind the hairline and let the afro spill out on top, a quick look for busy days.
- Day two or three: spray water with a little leave-in, seal the ends with a drop of light oil, then re-pick the roots into shape.
Care tips
Moisture is key: spritz with water and a leave-in, and detangle in small sections with conditioner.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Blow-drying it straight on high heat to show more length can loosen the coils for good. Stretch it with a twist-out or braid-out instead, or use low heat and a protectant.
- Oiling the base like your own scalp: oil seeps into the lace and knots, makes the hairline greasy and loosens adhesive. Keep oil on the lengths and ends only.
- Cutting it straight across like straight hair. Coils shrink unevenly, so the result looks choppy; trim it dry, coil by coil, following the shape of the afro.
How it compares
Kinky curly is the tightest and most afro-like texture we offer, with a soft finish and little shine. Jerry curl has bigger, glossier curls that read as defined rather than fluffy. Pixie curly forms neat separate ringlets instead of a blended afro. Burmese curly and bouncy curly are much looser and hang longer. Deep wave shows a clear S wave, while kinky curly shows almost no wave, only coils. Choose it when you want your wig to match afro-textured natural hair.
Questions about these wigs
How to care for a kinky curly wig?
Moisture first, handling second. Refresh the coils whenever they feel dry and seal the ends with a light cream or a drop of oil so the water stays in. Wash only when product builds up, sleep with the hair gathered loosely on top under a satin bonnet, and store it on a stand, not folded. Dry, crushed coils are what tangle and mat.
How to wash a kinky curly wig?
Wash it hanging down, never piled up. Finger-detangle with conditioner first, wet it with lukewarm water and squeeze a sulfate-free shampoo from roots to ends without rubbing. Rinse, leave conditioner on for a few minutes, rinse with cool water and squeeze out the water with a microfiber towel. Let it air-dry on a stand, turning it now and then so the afro dries round.
How to revive a kinky curly wig?
Give it a reset wash. Soak it in lukewarm water, detangle with plenty of conditioner, then leave a moisture mask on for a while under a plastic cap. Rinse cool, apply a leave-in and a curl cream section by section, and shingle or twist small sections so the coils clump again. Let it air-dry fully, then trim the frizzy ends that no longer curl.
How to style a kinky curly wig?
Shape it rather than comb it. Put the curl cream in while the hair is damp, let it dry, and only then pick the roots or pat the outline into shape. Keep tension low, because tight ponytails pull on the lace and can show the wefts at the nape. For more length, stretch it with twists; for more width, pick deeper at the roots.
How to maintain a kinky curly wig?
Plan for the long run: deep-condition it every few washes, use a clarifying shampoo when the coils stop clumping, and trim frizzy ends a little at a time. Rest it on a stand between wears, and if you wear a wig every day, rotating two spreads the wear. Kept like this, a kinky curly wig lasts about one to two years.
How is a kinky curly wig made?
At the factory, made to order. The hair, 100% human hair, is processed into a tight coil with a soft, textured feel, then sewn onto the cap in rows of wefts; along the front, single strands are hand-knotted into the lace so the hairline looks natural. At home, people sew kinky curly bundles and a closure onto a cap, where matching the coil pattern is the hard part.
Is a kinky curly wig an afro wig?
Yes: kinky curly is the human hair texture used for afro wigs, with tight coils, lots of volume and a low shine, like natural afro-textured hair. Lift the roots with a pick for a round shape; 180% or 200% density gives a full afro for every day. Unlike costume afro wigs, it can be washed, dyed darker and styled with moderate heat.
Is there a blonde or brown kinky curly wig?
Yes, in brown and in blonde highlights. Kinky curly comes in natural black, #4 chocolate brown, 99J wine, the 4/27, P4/27 and M4/27 honey-blonde highlight mixes and M4/350 copper highlight. An all-over 613 blonde is not a standard option, because lightening tight coils that far is hard on the hair; ask us before ordering and we tell you what is possible and quote it before you pay.
