The color

Natural black (1B) is a soft off-black, the most natural shade for dark hair. It works with every texture and is the safest match for your own hair and brows.

Who it flatters

Natural black flatters medium, olive, brown and deep skin with warm, neutral or cool undertones, because it matches the hair most people are born with and keeps attention on the face. On very fair, cool skin the contrast is stronger: striking with a red lip, harsh under office light, so a side part and a few face-framing pieces soften it. 1B needs no fake root; dust the part with powder that matches your scalp, keep brows deep brown to black and add a warm blush so the face does not look washed out.

How to style it

Black shows shape more than texture. Straight 1B reflects light like a mirror, so a blunt bob or sharp middle part looks crisp and graphic. Body wave and curly patterns lose definition in photos, since dark waves blend together; scrunch in a curl cream so each wave reads. Dark knots can show as tiny dots on the lace; where the option is listed, bleached knots make the part look like scalp. 1B takes the full moderate heat range, up to about 180 °C (350 °F), with a protectant.

Care tips

Dark hair hides wear well; a shine spray keeps it from looking dull.

Black barely fades, so its enemies are dullness and residue. Dry shampoo, gel and lint show as grey specks, and hard-water minerals leave a flat, ashy film; a clarifying wash every few washes clears both. Strong sun can warm 1B toward reddish brown over time, so store it covered and away from windows. Lukewarm water is fine for this shade. Finish with a drop of serum on the lengths only, never on the lace, where oil loosens knots and adhesive.

Dyeing and toning

1B takes darker color easily: one application of jet black deepens it. Lighter is harder: black passes through red, orange and yellow as it lifts. Dark brown, chocolate, mahogany, wine and honey highlights are realistic; platinum or pastel over the whole wig usually is not, since the hair weakens first, so light colors should start from 613. Before a custom color, send us a reference photo and say whether you want it all over or as highlights; we confirm what is reachable and quote it before you pay.

Questions about these wigs

What color is 1B in wigs?

1B is natural black: a soft off-black with a faint brown glint in sunlight, one step lighter than jet black (color 1). It is the shade most dark hair actually is, which is why it blends with brows and edges more easily than jet black. Our 1B comes in every texture we offer, from straight and yaki to kinky curly, in lace fronts, closures and bobs.

Can you dye a black wig brown?

Yes, but it has to be lifted first: brown dye alone barely shows over black. A gentle lift reaches dark brown; chocolate or chestnut needs a longer lift, then a toner to cancel the orange that lifting exposes. Test a strand from the nape before doing the whole wig. If you want brown without the process, our #4 chocolate brown comes in most of the same styles.

Can you dye a black wig blonde?

Yes, up to honey or caramel blonde, lifted slowly in more than one session with deep conditioning in between and a violet toner at the end. Platinum or icy blonde from black is rarely safe: the hair turns gummy or snaps before it gets that light. For a truly light blonde, start from our 613, which is already lightened and only needs toning.

How do you highlight a black wig?

Lighten only thin sections. Take fine slices around the part and face, place them on foil, apply lightener and check every few minutes until they reach caramel or honey, then rinse, tone and condition. Keep lightener away from the lace, because it weakens the knots. If you prefer it done before shipping, we can add custom highlights to a 1B wig, quoted before you pay.

Can you dye a black wig burgundy?

Yes, and it is one of the easiest changes from black, because red-violet shows with little or no lift. On unlightened 1B, burgundy dye gives a dark glow that is clearest in sunlight; a light lift first makes the color visible indoors too. Rinse in cool water afterward, since red pigment fades fast. Our burgundy and 99J wigs are the ready-made alternative.

How do you make a black wig look natural?

Break up the hairline and tone down the shine. Pluck a few hairs along the front so the edge is uneven, tint the lace to your skin with a lace spray or foundation, and lay a few baby hairs with a little gel. New black hair can look glassy, so a gentle wash and air-dry before the first wear makes it read like your own hair.

Is a long black wig heavy?

It depends on length and density, not color. At 32 inches (81 cm) and 250% or 300% density, a wig weighs clearly more than at 20 inches (51 cm) and 180%, and you feel the difference by evening. Every wig lists its weight for each length and density, so compare before you order; 180% looks full and stays comfortable for daily wear.
