Bob Wig

Bob wigs are short cuts around jaw or shoulder length. Bob wigs are light, quick to style and cooler in warm weather than long wigs.

Lace, density and length

A blunt straight bob looks sharp and polished; a wavy or curly bob looks softer and fuller.

What is a bob wig? Lengths from 10 to 16 inches

A bob wig is a short cut that ends somewhere between the jaw and the collarbone. Ours come in four lengths, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inches, measured from the crown to the ends with the hair pulled straight, and every one sits on a 13x4 or 13x6 lace front: a short cut shows the temples, so the hairline has to look real.

  • 10 inches (25 cm): ends at the chin or jaw and leaves the neck clear; the sharpest, shortest bob.
  • 12 inches (30 cm): falls around the middle of the neck, between jaw and shoulders.
  • 14 inches (36 cm): grazes the shoulders, long enough to tuck behind the ears or pin half up.
  • 16 inches (41 cm): rests on the collarbone, a long bob that still moves like a short cut.
  • These marks are for an average adult; a curly bob sits higher, because length is measured with the curl stretched.

Which bob length suits your face shape?

With a bob, length and part do most of the work. Use the jawline as your reference point.

  • Round face: 12 or 14 inches with a side part; length past the jaw and an off-center part make the face look longer.
  • Square face: 12 inches or longer, with the ends bent under; soft ends below the jaw break a strong jawline instead of repeating it.
  • Long face: 10 or 12 inches with a middle part; ends at the jaw add width at the sides.
  • Heart-shaped face: 12 or 14 inches, with fullness from the jaw down to balance a wider forehead.
  • Oval face: any length works, so choose by lifestyle, from a sharp 10 inch cut to a 16 inch long bob.
  • For a deep side part, which flatters round and square faces, choose 13x6 lace.

How to style a short bob wig

A bob holds its shape with little effort, and small changes read as a new look.

  • Bent ends: one pass of a flat iron, turning the wrist in at the end, curves the ends under; turn it out for a flip.
  • Curls: a small curling iron in alternating directions gives a textured bob; brush it out lightly for soft waves.
  • Sleek: a middle part and a flat iron from the roots, with a drop of serum on the ends, for a glossy blunt look.
  • Tucked: slide one side behind the ear and keep the other forward; 14 and 16 inch bobs tuck most easily.
  • Headband or scarf: place it a little behind the hairline, so the front hairline stays visible and natural.
  • Keep heat moderate, up to about 180 °C (350 °F) with a protectant: burnt ends show at once on a short cut.

Caring for a short wig: ends, frizz and storage

Short wigs weigh less and tangle less than long ones, but their weak point is the ends, which rub on collars, scarves and pillows right at the jawline.

  • Store it on a stand or in a satin bag, never folded, so the cut keeps its line.
  • Smooth the ends with a drop of light serum instead of reheating them every day.
  • Choose smooth fabrics around the neck; rough knits and wool fray the ends fastest.
  • Wash only when it needs it: short hair shows product buildup less, and each wash dries the ends a little.
  • If the ends split, a quarter-inch trim restores a clean line; a stylist can do it with the wig on a stand.

Questions about these wigs

How many inches is a bob wig?

Usually 8 to 16 inches, measured from the crown to the ends with the hair pulled straight. At 8 inches a bob ends above the jaw; 10 inches ends at the chin or jaw, 12 at mid-neck, 14 grazes the shoulders and 16 reaches the collarbone. Ours come in 10, 12, 14 and 16 inches. A curly bob sits higher than a straight one of the same length, because the curl springs up.

How do you style an 8 inch bob wig?

Keep it sharp and close to the face, with small tools. At 8 inches the bob ends above the jaw, so a narrow flat iron that bends the ends under, or flips them out, does most of the work; a small curling iron adds soft texture. A deep side part with one side tucked behind the ear looks polished. Our bobs start at 10 inches; for a shorter cut, ask us before you order and we quote it before you pay.

What is a bob wig?

A bob wig is a short-cut wig that ends between the jaw and the collarbone. Ours come in 10, 12, 14 and 16 inches, all 100% human hair on a 13x4 or 13x6 lace front, so the hairline looks natural when the short cut shows the temples. It can be heat-styled, curled or straightened like your own hair.

How long is a 12 inch bob wig?

It falls around the middle of the neck, between the jaw and the shoulders, on an average adult. Bob length is measured from the crown to the ends with the hair pulled straight, so a curly 12 inch bob sits closer to the jaw. For ends that touch the shoulders choose 14 inches; for a jaw-length cut, 10.

How do you cut a wig into a bob?

Pin the wig to a head-shaped stand, part it the way you wear it, and clip the top out of the way. Cut the nape first to the length you want, then let down one section at a time and match it to that guide, working toward the face. Cut straight hair dry in small snips; cut curly hair curl by curl. Or skip the scissors: our bob wigs come ready cut in 10 to 16 inches.

How do you curl a bob wig with a flat iron?

Work in small sections at moderate heat, up to about 180 °C (350 °F), with a heat protectant. Clamp a section just below the roots, never on the lace, turn the iron half a turn and glide it slowly to the ends. Alternate the direction from one section to the next, let the curls cool, then break them up with your fingers.

How do you wrap a bob wig at night?

Brush it smooth, then comb the hair flat around the head in one direction and pin it close, the way a doobie wrap is done. Cover it with a satin scarf or bonnet and it wakes up smooth, with the ends still in line. If you take the wig off at night, keep it on a stand instead of folding it.

How do you make a bob wig look natural?

Get the hairline right first: trim the lace closely at the temples, which a short cut shows, and melt it with a scarf. Add concealer under the part if your scalp is darker than the lace, or choose bleached knots where the style offers them. Pick a medium density, 150% or 180%, since a very full bob can look boxy, and bend the ends so they move.

What is an A-line bob wig?

An A-line bob is cut shorter at the nape and gradually longer toward the face, so the front frames the jaw while the back stays neat. It suits round and square faces well. Our bob wigs come in set lengths from 10 to 16 inches; if you want an A-line angle or another cut, ask us before you order and we quote it before you pay.

How do you thin out a bob wig?

The easiest way is to choose a lower density when you order: 150% or 180% instead of 200% or more, since a short cut shows every extra strand as bulk. To thin a wig you already have, a stylist can use thinning shears on the underneath layers, away from the lace and the part, a little at a time; wig hair does not grow back.

How do I choose between Bob Wig?

A blunt straight bob looks sharp and polished; a wavy or curly bob looks softer and fuller.
