Human hair wig terms explained: virgin, remy, Brazilian and more
Wig shops use many trade names for hair; this guide explains what the common terms usually mean so you can compare listings.
Step by step
- Human hair means real hair, as opposed to synthetic fiber; it can be heat-styled and colored.
- Remy usually means the cuticles are kept aligned in one direction, which reduces tangling.
- Virgin usually means hair that has not been chemically processed or colored.
- Names like Brazilian, Peruvian or Malaysian are mostly trade names for a texture and weight, not a verified country of origin.
- Our hair is mostly Indian and Vietnamese hair.
- Grades such as 10A, 12A or 15A are defined by each factory, not by an industry standard; ours are graded 12A and 15A by the factories we work with, so compare photos, weight and density rather than the letter alone.
- Before shipping we send photos or a video of your exact wig.
Human hair or synthetic: how to tell
Human hair and synthetic fiber can look alike in a photo; they behave differently in your hands. A few simple checks tell them apart.
- Feel and shine: human hair feels soft, with a natural, low shine; synthetic fiber is often slippery, very uniform and glossy under light.
- Heat: human hair takes a flat iron and curling iron at moderate heat, up to about 180 °C (350 °F) with a protectant; most synthetic fiber melts or frizzes unless it is labeled heat-friendly, and even then it only takes low heat.
- Water: wet human hair behaves like your own hair, while synthetic fiber keeps its factory style and dries very quickly.
- Burn test on one shed strand, held with tweezers over a sink: human hair burns slowly, smells like burnt hair and leaves a fine ash; synthetic fiber melts into a hard bead.
- Blends mix human hair with synthetic fiber; they react to heat unevenly and tangle where the two meet.
- Every wig we sell is 100% human hair.
Why cuticle direction matters in human hair
Each human hair is covered in a cuticle: tiny overlapping scales that all point from the root toward the tip, like roof tiles. When every strand in a wig keeps its scales pointing the same way, the hair slides past itself, stays smooth and tangles less.
When strands are mixed root to tip, the scales catch on each other and the hair knots, especially at the nape. Hair like that is often treated in an acid bath that strips the cuticle, then coated with silicone, so it looks glossy at first; once the coating washes out, the tangling starts.
That is why the way a wig behaves after a few washes tells you more about the hair than any label: notice how easily it detangles, whether the ends stay smooth and how much it sheds.
How to compare human hair wig listings
Trade names say little about the hair itself. These details tell you what you are actually buying:
- Length: always the stretched length, measured from the crown; curls look shorter than their length.
- Density: from 150% to 300%, it changes fullness and weight far more than any hair name.
- Lace: the size, such as 13x4, 13x6, 4x4 or 5x5, sets where you can part the hair; the type, transparent or HD, sets how it blends with your skin.
- Weight: the grams for the exact length and density you order; two wigs with the same name can weigh very differently.
- Photos or a video of the exact wig, not only catalog images: we send them before your wig ships.
- The full price, delivered: for Mexico and Colombia ours includes shipping and import duties.
Questions
What is remy human hair?
Remy is a trade term for human hair collected so that the cuticles, the outer layer of each strand, all point the same way, from root to tip. Aligned cuticles lie flat, so the hair tangles and mats less. Each seller uses the word differently, so judge a wig by photos, weight and how it behaves: we describe ours by texture, density, length and weight, and show you the exact wig before it ships.
Does Brazilian hair come from Brazil?
Usually not: in the wig trade, Brazilian, Peruvian or Malaysian are names for a texture and feel rather than a proven country of origin.
What does 12A or 15A hair mean?
It is a factory grade: each factory sets its own scale, so a 12A from one seller is not the same as a 12A from another. Ours are graded 12A and 15A by the factories we work with.
Where does your hair come from?
Mostly from India and Vietnam, the two largest sources of human hair for wigs.
